Fairies are a subgroup of almost every species in existence. Contrary to popular belief, they are not their own species. Members of fairy subgroups usually gain Lepidopteran features (unless that species already has them) and are smaller than the rest of their species by a noticable amount (although there are some exceptions). They also usually are capable of gaining magical abilities more quickly than non-fairies of their species, and are prone to everything from mischief to downright cruelty (although there are, again, exceptions). Fairies usually keep their more abnormal features hidden via magic in societies made up of creatures who would look down upon them, although in some cases in which they are of a species that normally has a particularly hard time taking up magic they conquer their magic-inferior brethren and enslave them.
